Information Design is a Powerful Tool
Information design is a fascinating and richly rewarding aspect of our practice. There is transformational power in effectively displaying complex information visually.
Beautiful graphics generate understanding, leading to insight, informed decision-making, and ultimately, wisdom.
We are avid students of Edward Tufte, who observes that graphic excellence requires integration of three disparate skills: substantive, statistical and artistic. We are energized by that challenge.
Process Mapping
Process diagrams illustrate steps and the relationships between them. Often the best way to understand a complex process is to see it both as a high-level roll-up, and a detailed flow chart.
Complex Systems Mapping: Relationships and Responsibilities
Sometimes simply being able to see a system as a picture instead of as a text-based description can help stakeholders understand the reality of a situation.
Industry Cluster Schematic
Cluster schematics provide a snapshot of the organizations in a defined economic sector by some classification, showing the relationships between entities, classes, and each other.
Demographic Analysis
We help cities understand their social and economic situation through comparative analysis. Using rich, detailed graphics to display the information helps stakeholders draw meaningful conclusions.
Comparative Municipal Statistics
Taking large sets of comparative data and turning them into information graphics helps tell stories, which can help make the data come alive.
Economic Indicators
Communicating the economic history of a city is helped immensely by accompanying text with compelling graphics. Seeing change in an image versus reading about it is simpler for most people.
Graphics to Support Long-Range Planning
The Washington State Ferry System’s Long Range Plan is both large in scope and minutely detailed. We used a variety of techniques to illustrate the agency’s history and future plans.
Timelines
Timelines can be used to illustrate processes as well as plans, and can take a myriad of forms.
Creative Information Display
We use many types of graphical forms to communicate information and results for our clients. Sometimes a pie chart will do just fine—but sometimes a more creative approach is warranted.
Large Data Set Analysis
Among our most interesting work is taking an agency’s large datasets and working with them to produce meaningful and understandable results.
Decision Trees: Understanding the Core Questions and Choices
Decision trees can be extremely helpful as a tool in facilitated processes. They can help everyone at the table come to a common understanding of the situation, and can point the way to resolution.
Survey Results: Analysis and Reporting
To extract maximum strategic value from survey data, we think deeply and creatively about the results, and develop rich visualizations to display patterns and highlight key findings.
